Paul Broome had a sweet tooth—so much so that his final resting place was in a Snickers candy casket. The candy-loving Brit, known for his humor and larger-than-life personality, had long joked about wanting to be buried in a Snickers-themed coffin. His family, at first, dismissed the idea as just another one of his playful remarks. But when they discovered he had made it official in his will, they knew they had to make it happen.
And so, Broome took his final journey in a candy casket designed to look like a partially unwrapped Snickers bar. The coffin even featured the phrase “I’m nuts!” painted boldly on the side—a nod to both the candy’s ingredients and the man’s mischievous spirit. For those who knew him, this was the only send-off that made sense.
Paul had worked as a Care Assistant at a home for adults with learning disabilities, where he was cherished for his sharp wit and boundless humor. Friends and family alike described him as one of life’s true characters, and according to Ali Leggo, a Funeral Arranger at F A Holland (Co-op) Funeralcare, the service had to reflect that. “Paul’s quick wit and humor touched so many people, and the candy casket was a perfect tribute to his unique personality,” she said.

But the Snickers-style farewell wasn’t the only personal touch. Broome, originally from South London, was a die-hard Crystal Palace FC supporter, so his beloved soccer club’s logo was also emblazoned on the coffin. The funeral procession even took a detour past Paul’s favorite café in Bognor Regis, where friends wearing custom tribute T-shirts stood and applauded as he made his final journey.
The response to this unconventional funeral was overwhelmingly positive. “Everyone who attended commented on how the personal details turned the service into a true celebration of Paul’s life,” Leggo shared. “It was a privilege to help bring his final wishes to life.”
It’s not the first time someone has made an unusual request for their final farewell. In 2021, one man’s children honored his wishes by pouring his ashes down a bar drain. But Paul Broome’s candy casket takes the (chocolate) cake as one of the most delightfully eccentric send-offs in recent memory.
