Orlando, Florida – Forget about lazy sloths; it’s a different kind of sloth that’s causing a stir in Florida. A new virus, aptly named “Sloth Fever,” has made its way to the Sunshine State, and it’s not your typical vacation souvenir.
The Oropouche virus, as it’s officially known, was first discovered in the Amazon region and is primarily spread by infected mosquitoes. But thanks to some adventurous travelers, it’s now making its Florida debut.
So, what’s the big deal about Sloth Fever? Well, aside from the catchy name, it can cause a range of unpleasant symptoms, including:
- Fever
- Muscle pain
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Arthralgia (joint pain)
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea/vomiting
While most cases are mild, there have been some serious complications, including deaths.
The Florida Department of Health has reported cases in several counties, including Miami-Dade, Broward, and Orange. And with mosquito season in full swing, health officials are urging residents to take precautions, like wearing insect repellent and avoiding outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours.
But don’t worry, you don’t need to avoid sloths altogether. Just make sure you’re not getting too close to any infected ones. And remember, if you’ve recently traveled to areas like Cuba or Brazil and start feeling under the weather, it might be time to see a doctor.
