A former mail carrier in Central Florida has decided to plead guilty after authorities discovered he was behind a massive mail dump—more than 1,000 pieces of undelivered mail discarded in a wooded section of an Orlando neighborhood.
According to investigators, the postal worker, identified as 19-year-old Ottis McCoy of Sanford, was assigned to deliver mail in the Alafaya Woods area back in October. Everything seemed routine—until it wasn’t.
His supervisor grew suspicious when McCoy, despite having an unusually hefty load of U.S. Mail, completed his route far quicker than expected. That raised a red flag. A closer look at his vehicle’s GPS data revealed something odd: instead of sticking to his designated route, McCoy had veered off onto Faberge Drive and Lalique Lane, places he had no reason to be.

It didn’t take long for a postal inspector to check out the area in question. And sure enough, just as the data suggested, a major mail dump had taken place. Scattered across the forest floor were hundreds of letters, including over 400 pieces of political mail and even an election ballot—tossed aside as if they were trash.
But McCoy hadn’t exactly pulled off the perfect crime. A nearby home had security cameras rolling, capturing every move. The footage clearly showed him arriving at the wooded area on October 22, just after 5:14 p.m., and then dumping a significant amount of mail. No subtlety, no hesitation—just an outright disposal of people’s letters and important documents.
I’m sure your mailman is legit, but just in case……
That evidence sealed his fate. McCoy was arrested and initially charged with mail theft, though court records from last week indicate he has now agreed to plead guilty to obstructing the mail. If convicted, he could face up to six months behind bars and a fine as high as $5,000.
This incident is just another reminder of the trust placed in postal workers—and how a single careless mail dump can compromise that trust in an instant.
