Prunedale, California – A local man is facing severe charges after allegedly committing one of the most horrific acts of animal cruelty in the state’s history. Vicente Arroyo, 39, was arrested by Monterey County Sheriff deputies earlier this week and has since pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty and other related offenses.
The incident occurred on a lot in the small community of Prunedale, where Arroyo allegedly used multiple weapons to target animals housed in pens and cages. The victims included miniature horses, goats, chickens, ducks, rabbits, and numerous birds. Many of the animals were pets belonging to the property owners.
According to authorities, the shooting rampage lasted several hours, resulting in the deaths of over 80 animals. Some animals survived the initial attack but had to be euthanized due to severe injuries.
Arroyo’s attorney has requested a mental health evaluation, citing concerns about his client’s competency. The judge has ordered a psychiatric evaluation to determine if Arroyo is fit to stand trial.
In addition to animal cruelty charges, Arroyo is also facing counts of willful discharge of a firearm, illegal possession of an assault weapon, vandalism, drug possession, and making criminal threats. The incident has shocked the local community and prompted widespread condemnation of the violence.
Deputies responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the area and found Arroyo at the scene. He was arrested without incident, and several firearms were recovered from his possession. The investigation into the motive behind the attack is ongoing.
